On Sunday, December 6, 2020, seventy hearty cheers rented the air as beautiful society matriarch, Dame Dr. Amaopurubo Tuminingoningim (Tumini) Christy Akogun, an accomplished administrator, business tycoon and philanthropist, joined the septuagenerian club.
The celebrant is the wife of Rt. Honourable Colonel Tunde Akogun (retd), the former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives in the Sixth Assembly. Col. Akogun is many things rolled into one; a soldier, a culture administrator and at a later time, a politician. A leftist by his political leaning, he is a disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The Akoguns have been married for fifty years and their union is blessed with five children and ten grandchildren.
The 70th birthday reception was held at BMO Event Arena, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja. It was chaired by Dr. Ahmadu Ali, the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The cake-cutting session was conducted by Hajia Titi Atiku Abubakar, wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the celebrant’s autobiography titled, Grace Alone to the guests.
Dame Akogun was the pioneer Secretary of the Nigerian Officers Wives Association, NAOWA in Ilorin, Kwara State. After her husband retired from the army, Dame Akogun was elected as the President of the Retired Armed Forces and Police Officers Wives Association, RAFPOWA, Lagos State chapter. When her husband was elected as the Majority Leader, she founded House of Representatives Members Wives Association, HORMWA.
Dame Akogun runs an NGO known as NINGIM Hope Alive Foundation, that caters for women, children and the less privileged. Dame Akogun had her primary and secondary school education in Rivers State then went on to Pittman College, England, where she did a secretarial programme. She worked as a secretary for many years before she resigned and became a business woman. She is into the hospitality business; running a guest house, providing food services to organisations and also outdoor catering.
