A Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded a 29 year-old blogger, Desmond Ike-Chima in prison custody over alleged malicious publication against the Managing Director of United Bank of Africa (UBA), Philips Oduoza.
Ike-Chima was arraigned on a two-count charge before Justice Mohammed Yunusa who ordered his remand in prison pending the determination of his bail application.
The prosecutor, Henry Obiazi told the court that the defendant and others still at large in March, 2015 at Ojodu area of Lagos, falsely published an article by means of computer on the internet, titled “Randy UBA MD, Philips Oduoza in Adultery Mess, Romances Star Actress Genevieve Nnaji.”
According to the prosecutor, the publication was for the purpose of causing annoyance,danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety to the victim.
He also claimed that the publication led to the wife of Oduoza divorcing him over the alleged affair with the actress, Genevieve Nnaji.
According to the prosecutor the offences allegedly committed by the accused are punishable under sections 24(1)(b) of the Cyber-crime Prohibition Prevention Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2015.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and the prosecutor urged the court to remand him in prison pending the hearing of his bail application.
The defence counsel, Nnamdi Mofunaya on his part, prayed for a short adjournment in order to file all the necessary applications
Consequently, Justice Yunusa adjourned the matter till November 6, 2015 for hearing on the bail application.
