The over one month old protest of aggrieved staff of Daily Independent Newspapers took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as various chapters of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) stormed the head office of the daily newspaper on WEMPCO Road, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos to protest the non-payment of the staffs’ 25 months salaries and the non-remittance of its pension and taxes to the appropriate authorities.
The protesting staff who singled out the publication’s embattled Managing Director, Mr. Ted Iwere as the man behind their ordeal, displayed placards calling for his arrest, as they urged Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to arrest Iwere over his failure to remit tax deductions to the appropriate authorities. The workers who were backed by drummers and singers to draw attention to their protest march also asked for the whereabouts of the sum of N6m allegedly missing from their cooperative funds.
Present at the rally were the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr. Deji Elumoye, Chairman of National Union Nwachukwu Emmanuel, the Chairman of the Daily Independent Newspapers NUJ Chapter, Mr. Ajibola Ayorinde.
