Nigerians have reacted to actress Funke Akindele’s statement about defeating the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Lagos State with the help of her social media followers.
Funke in an Instagram post on July 12 announced she has been chosen as the running mate of Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State.
Explaining why she will emerge as the deputy governor, Funke in a recent interview with Channels TV, stated that she and Jandor have the numbers required to win, adding that she has over 20 million followers on social media.
She said: “He has the numbers, I have the numbers, I am true to myself. I have over 20 million fans on social media. The grassroots are my fans, Outside of Ikorodu. I have fans at the grassroots level and I’m true to myself. What I’m coming for is to better the lives of Lagosians. I am tired of talking, I am tired of typing. I want a positive change.”
The statement sparked reactions on social media as some tweeps pointed out that elections cannot be won on social media.
I’m surprised Funke akindele thinks she can win election because of the No of followers she has🤦🏻♀️ It’s common sense to know No of SM followers don’t determine one’s success in elections. #funkeakindele #OBIdients #instagramdown #lagosSwindler #TwitterDown
