Funmilayo Ransome Kuti: Dignitaries Honour Bolanle Austen-Peters At Movie Premiere

On Sunday, May 12, 2024, the city of Lagos played host to a galaxy of dignitaries who converged at Terra Kulture, Victoria Island to witness the grand premiere of the much-anticipated biopic, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.

Renowned filmmaker, Bolanle Austen-Peters, hosted the grand event, which recorded the presence of Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; members of the Ransome-Kuti family, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, and an impressive assembly of dignitaries, celebrities, and influencers, making it a truly star-studded affair.

Staying true to the theme of the premiere, celebrities showed up for the premiere in their traditional outfits reflecting the styles of the times of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.

The red carpet buzzed with excitement as guests praised the biopic’s powerful narrative and Austen-Peters’ dedication to bringing such an important story to life.

Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and written by award-winning Tunde Babalola, the biopic paints a vivid picture of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, highlighting her role as a champion for justice and mother of Afrobeat legend, Fela. Through her dynamic storytelling, Austen-Peters captures the essence of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s contributions to the fight for women’s right shedding light on her enduring legacy.

The movie is notable for its brilliant storytelling, unique characters, and stunning craftsmanship. It portrays the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a revered figure known for her role as a nationalist and activist in Nigeria. It follows her story from her pioneering days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti.

Together, they challenged oppression and created the Abeokuta Women’s Union, igniting a fierce battle against colonial and traditional rulers. This narrative artfully contrasts FRK’s tireless activism with her delicate balancing act as a wife and mother, revealing the resilience of a woman who changed the course of history.
Bolanle Austen-Peters, recognized by Forbes Afrique and CNN, led the production, while
Joseph Umoibom, and Lance Gewer contributed significantly.

The biopic parades a stellar cast which includes Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Ibrahim Suleiman, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Yewande Osamein, and Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko.

Acclaimed for her remarkable contributions to theater and film, Austen-Peters expressed her enthusiasm about the project. She emphasised the importance of celebrating Nigerian heroes and preserving their stories for future generations.

The biopic hit cinemas nationwide on May 17.
