Gani Adams Launches OPU In Ghana, Cote D ‘Ivoire and Togo

imageThe capital cities of three countries in the West Coast , Ghana (Accra ) Cote d ‘Ivoire ( Abidjan ) and Togo ( Lome) within the last two weeks experienced unprecedented presence of dignitaries and showcasing of Yoruba cultural- tourism display when Otunba Gani Adams , the National Coordinator , Oodua People’s Congress ( OPC ) formerly inaugurated , Oodua Progressive Union ,( OPU ) in each of the countries and the cities .
Otunba Adams led a 32 strong delegates which include four traditional rulers from the Yoruba land viz , Oba Joseph Adeoye Adewole , the Owa Ajero of Ijero kingdom , Oba Yisa Olanipekun , the Zaki of Arigidi , Ondo State , Oba Walidu Sanni Onigedegede of Igededgede , Ondo State and Oba Lasisi Olawuyi .,.Asagangan of Igangan , Oyo state , Captain Adetokunbo Adesina Yomi Fash – Lanso , a foremost Yoruba actor , MC kirikiri , notable members of Oodua Peoples ‘Congress , OPC in Abuja ,Lagos , Ilorin, bloggers , journalists and others for a 12 day Yoruba Cultural tourism revival in these three countries
In each of these cities, the Yoruba joyfully received Otunba Adams and his entourage with wonderful display and exhibition of cultural dance, drumming , chants and fascinating display which enchanted and attracted the citizens of the countries to the venues
The cultural evangelization kicked off on Friday 11, September 2015 in the city of Abidjan , Cote D’Ivoire , a country where Yoruba is reputed to constitute 2.5 million of the population , Otunba Adams led the delegate to the warm embrace of the Nigerian Ambassador , Mrs Ifeoma Jacinite Akabogu – Chinwuba who, together with members of the Embassy rolled a red carpet reception for the visiting Yoruba cultural revivalists .
Otunba Adams clinically explained the mission of his delegate to the Ambassador “ We are not here for political reason . Far from it . We are neither here for self – determination tendencies but we are here to stoke and re- kindle the dying embers of the pristine Yoruba cultural values and heritage which is alarmingly trekking towards extinction particularly among the Yoruba in Diaspora “
He disclosed that “We realize that Cote D ‘Ivoire harbours a substantial percentage of Yoruba , some of who cannot speak their mother’s language or exhibit their cultural values . Some here have lost contact with history , culture and norms of their progenitor . This is why we have to be here in accordance with the mission bestowed on us by Oduduwa and the necessity of saving members of the Yoruba race from cultural extinction “
Otunba Adams revealed the difference between Oodua Peoples ‘Congress , OPC and Oodua Progressive Union , OPU , “ OPC is a self determination group solely to protect the territorial integrity of Yoruba within the political geography of Nigeria and within Nigeria while Oodua Progressive Union , OPU , is a socio – cultural organisation saddled with the responsibility of re- awakening and resuscitating the dying embers of pristine Yoruba culture among the Yoruba in the Diaspora ‘. It is non- political and non –militant “
The Ajero of Ijero , Oba Adewole also gave an insight into the cultural revival mission of OPU “ This association is to save our race from cultural doom . It is an association which has received the backing and blessing of the traditional Oba and Chiefs in Yoruba land . Thus we are here with Otunba Adams in support and in alliance with his stride to revive and sustain the cultural heritage and value of our race .”
Ambassador Akabogu – Chinwuba in her response commended Otunba Adams for “ Coming out at this time to wake up his people from cultural slumber . I have read the Mission Statement of the association and I believe Otunba Adams is on the right path of history “
The Ambassador gave her blessing to the inauguration of the Union “I am sure and confident that OPU as an association will not only help in cultural revival of the Yoruba value but also serve as a coordinating platform for members of the race and an institution of behavioural adherence “
Ambassador Akabogu – Chinwuba who presented plague of honour to Otunba Adams and other four traditional rulers declared her support for the Union “We are here at the Embassy for the protection and welfare of Nigerians here . We cannot and shall not shy away from this responsibility. We assure OPU of our support and assistance now and always as our doors are opened for progressive associations and unions which strive to add value and shore up the image of Nigeria . I welcome you to Cote D ‘ivoire and wish you a successful inauguration of OPU in Abidjan . “
Welcoming the Oodua cultural revivalists to Sport De Treichville , Abidjan , where a mass of gaily dressed Yoruba and their friends had gathered for the inauguration of OPU , Mr kareem Nasir Adeolu ,Coordinator OPU and President Yoruba Community in Cote D’ivore declared that “This is one of our finest moments in the life of over 2.5 million Yoruba in Cote D ‘Ivoire . This is the first time in the history of our sojourning here when a Yoruba son will lead eminent Yoruba Obas and dignitaries to address us not for political reason but solely on cultural heritage and values . We are most grateful for this and we delightfully welcome Otunba Gani Adams , his entourage and Oodua Progressive Union wholeheartedly to our midst . “
He commended Otunba Adams for “bringing to us a cultural association which will further cement and fasten the chord of brotherhood amongst the Yoruba in Cote D ‘Ivoire
Otunba Adams while inaugurating OPU Cote D ‘Ivoire on Saturday 12 September 2015 pointed out that “This is the 59th OPU Chapter being launched here today . It is a clarion call upon all of you all to remember, embrace, perpetuate and display your cultural antecedent and value and ensured it passage to the next generations so that generations unborn will not lose their identity to foreigners : “
He charged members of OPU to “always keep in mind that you are the image of Yoruba , You are the light of the race and cultural ambassador of Yoruba whatever your conduct and traits here c
Mr Olumuyiwa Ogundeme ,Consular officer ,Nigerian Embassy , Cote D ‘Ivoire who represented Ambassador Jacinite Akabogu – Chinwuba while commending Otunba Adams said that “ I am glad Otunba Adam is going all over the world singing it loud and clear to the ears of Yoruba people the need to embrace and revive their cultural values which is their identity at the comity of nations. I am also assuring you that the Embassy is ready and willing to support OPU in its activities and others positive acts which will bring honour to the race and Nigeria “
The icing of the cake of the OPU Cote D ‘Ivoire inauguration was the spectacular exhibition of cultural creativity by Atunda Cultural Group packaged by Ambassador Wanle Akinboboye held at the prestigious ……Hotel .

The euphoria of the Cote D “ivories’ inauguration spilled to Ghana where the Oodua Progressive Union delegation led by Otunba Adams received warmth welcome to the country by the President of Yoruba community in Ghana , Chief Musa Baba .. Who held a memorable reception for the group in his posh house in Accra .
Chief Baba shocked the entourage when he started reeling out the challenges and accomplishments of Otunba Adams before he got married , when he got wedded , time of tribulation and persecution and to the last one year

He assured Otunba Adams of a wonderful and memorable inauguration in Ghana which is just the second home to Yoruba.
Chief Baba on behalf of all Yoruba in Ghana presented a plague of Honour and recognition to Otunba Adams for doing “the Yoruba race proud “
And living up to his assurance , the Hall 2 of the National Art Theatre , Liberia Road , Accra , Ghana was not only filled up to the brim on Friday 18 September 2015 but recorded the presence of Raheem Kolawole , who teaches at Winneba University Ghana , who came along with two very distinguished Ghanaians Dr.Toni Aubynn ,Chief Executive Officer , Ghana Minerals Commission and Nana Ankamu Otabil , 1X , Chief of Gomoa Ankamu l Ankobeaben of Gomoa , Ajumako Traditional Area , Accra while the Oba of Yoruba Barrister , Bashiru Perigino Bramah who was represented by Alhaji Bilaminu Bramah to with an apology of “ having very .very tight schedule “
While the Oba of Yoruba in Ghana was very elated that OPU is being launched in Ghana, Professor Kolawole sang a song which all in the hall danced to as Oba Olanipekun gave royal prayers for all in the Hall.
Nana Otabil said that “The Yoruba should be grateful to God for sending a strong personality in the person of Otunba Adams at this time to wake them up from the slumber and rejuvenate the dying cultural values and heritage of their forefathers “
He called on the Yoruba in Ghana to embrace Oodua Progressive Union , OPU, which he described as “ a powerful platform stronger than any association in scope and in mission .When you talk of a Union , you are talking of a powerfully strong group of people who can leverage on the association for the benefits of the race “
Nana Otabil disclosed that “It will be unfortunate if someone like Otunba Adams has not surfaced to reclaim the wonderful and exciting Yoruba heritage and culture from the brink of forgetfulness “
The acting Co-ordinator, of OPU in Ghana, Mr Kayode Siyannbola thanked Otunba Adams for “giving us the courage and the necessary supports in bringing out the strength in us to promote our culture and heritage and in hosting you today “
Otunba Adams placed the running of OPU Ghana in the hands of a 3- man committee which include the acting Coordinator , OPU Ghana , Mr Sinyanbola , Chief Baba and another Nigerian Chief who he charged to ensure the proper establishment of an Executive Committee for the Union .

The inauguration of the 60th OPU in Ghana was made memorable not only by the various Yoruba cultural group which displayed and danced to the satisfaction of all but also by the rib cracking tales unleashed on the guests by the Master – Of – Ceremony , MC kirikiri who ensured that majority of the guest smiles their sorrow off .
The Ghana’s momentum of success was hijacked by the Yoruba in Togo who decorated a Hall at the Palaise De Congress De Lome , Republic of Togo on Sunday 20 September 2015 for the inauguration of Oodua Progressive union, Togo
The OPU inauguration in Togo was spearheaded by His Royal Majesty , Oba Alhaji Kareem Afolabi Amoloko 1 of Togo , who is the paramount Oba of Yoruba in Togo ,
Oba Amoloko in conjunction with Mr Dauda Toriola Yusuff Olugbodi , OPU Coordinator in Togo ensured a breathtaking package of blissful ceremony which attracted over 2 000 Yoruba in Togo to Lome .
The Nigerian ambassador in Togo , Mr Gilbert Nnaji added colour to the inauguration when he did not only commended Otunba Adams for the onerous responsibility which fate has saddled him with but also praised the Yoruba in Togo of being “just 3 per cent of the Embassy problem in Togo “
Ambassador Nnaji who was visibly elated by the inauguration of OPU in Togo confessed of being “opportune to share the same table with Otunba Adams , a great Nigerian and a Yoruba ICON who always stand up to defend whatever he believes in no matter whose OX is to be gored “
He congratulated Yoruba in Togo for having “A purposeful Union which is set to stoke the dying embers of the pristine Yoruba culture and tradition which the race is not only identified but which stand them out in any community “
A six year old girl , Akinpelu Seinat fire the Yoruba patriotic feeling and stoke the sense of responsibility of those present at the event when she recited the Yoruba poem “Mura si ise re ore mi “ with describable gestures which emphasize the meaning of every line of the poem to the amazement of all
Otunba Adams in his speech pointed out that “this is the 61 OPU chapters we are inaugurating today and I must commend you for your brilliance at planning and wonderful in implementation which should be the benchmark for OPU in Togo “
Summing up the 12 days Yoruba cultural revival journey of Otunba Adams in the West Coast countries of Cote D ‘ivoire , Ghana and Togo with over 32 strong delegates , Mr Yomi Fash – Lanso ,one of the brightest and leading Yoruba actor said “ Otunba has done what nobody has ever attempted or did in the history of Yoruba land when it comes to revitalisation and resuscitation of the Yoruba culture among the Diaspora.
