Google executive Dan Fredinburg was one those killed in an avalanche on Mount Everest, following the devastating 7.8 earthquake that rocked Nepal early this morning. Fredinburg served as Chief of Privacy for Google X, and headed up product management for the company’s Privacy team.

His sister made the news public via Instagram, attributing his death to a “major head injury”. “We appreciate all of the love that has been sent our way thus far and know his soul and his spirit will live on in so many of us,” she said.

A frequent mountaineer who survived an avalanche in 2014, Fredinburg described himself in his Twitter bio as “adventurer, inventor, and energetic engineer”. His Instagram profile reads “I want everyone to… have the heart of an adventurer.” He was hiking with British mountaineering outfit Jagged Globe. According to the company, the rest of the team – including the Sherpa guides – survived unharmed.

As of this writing, the Nepal quake, the biggest to hit the impoverished nation since the 1930s, has killed more than 1,080 people in the region, with the effects felt in India, China Pakistan, and Tibet. The death toll from the Everest avalanche is still unknown, though at least 10 climbers and guides have perished. The toll is expected to rise as the damage is assessed.
