It’s A Lie, Mark Is Not Senate Leader – Dino Melaye Clarifies

imageNewly sworn-in Senator Dino Melaye from Kogi State has refuted stories making the rounds that the immediate past Senate President, David Mark has been selected as the Senate Leader.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Senator Melaye said the story was a figment of someone’s imagination as the position has not been filled. In his words: “it is a complete lie. That position is still open and in actual fact it is to be filled by the majority party, so whoever told you that is not telling the truth”.
Senator Melaye who was speaking against the controversy trailing the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President, said that the leadership election process witnessed in the Senate yesterday was perfectly constitutional and lawful.
According to Senator Melaye who was Spokesperson of the Like Mind Group “The President, in his constitutional duty, sent a proclamation letter to the National Assembly. In that proclamation letter, he stated categorically that the proclamation of the 8th Senate will be done at 10 a.m. on June 9, 2015.
“How can Mr President on one hand send a letter of proclamation to the National Assembly and on the other hand, call for a meeting at the International Conference Centre? If Mr President wants to meet legislators, the Defence House is there, the Villa is there, the Banquet Hall is there; why International Conference Centre? “However, did Mr President eventually attend to anybody at International Conference Centre? Capital No! “The Buhari that we know cannot and will not give two contrary opinions, especially one that is against the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“It is not true that we disrespected the President and if the President wants to do that, he would have called. He had the powers to call the Clerk of the National Assembly to say `please postpone to 12 p.m., I want to meet senators at 9 a.m.
Noting that President Buhari had consistently maintained that he will not interfere in the Naational Assembly leadership elections, and promised to work with all those who emerge, he said it was heart-warming the Mr. President has kept to his words.
Indeed, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Mr. Femi Adesina had issued a press release yesterday telling the whole world that President Buhari was ready to work with the newly-elected leadership because the process of their emergence was constitutional.
Senator described all the APC Senators who participated in the election as committed party members who were bent on ensuring that the right thing was done, adding that they were ready to work towards the unity of the party, and the success of the Buhari administration.
Meanwhile at the Senate Chambers today, the APC Senators who were absent at yesterday’s sitting were all sworn in.
