Last week, the nation, and the world, watched, as a gang of hoodlums invaded the Senate, and carted away the mace, the symbol of power of the Red Chamber.
The hoodlums were reportedly sent by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representing Delta East, who was suspended by the Senate, following a recommendation of some members of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
While the outcry over the disappearance of the mace was trending heavily, another report hit the airwaves, that the senator representing Lagos West, Adeola Solomon aka Yayi, had narrowly escaped being kidnapped by the perpetrators of the invasion, while escaping from the National Assembly.
An eyewitness and a legislative aide of a National Assembly member also from the South West, had however, deflated Senator Yayi’s balloon of lies. According to this source, Senator Yayi should have rehashed his ‘story’ well before releasing it to the newsmen.
“I think we should have the fear of God, when we’re talking or craving publicity. I witnessed the whole drama from the beginning to the end and it was obvious what the mission of the invaders was.
“After the hoodlums had taken the mace in the full glare of senators and the National Assembly security details, they headed out. It was about the same time Yayi was making his way into the complex. He drove in, in an SUV similar to that of the invaders. He got down and was making his way into the complex, when some people told him what had just happened.
“He quickly ran back and instead of entering his car, he entered the car of the hoodlums, who were looking for an alternative route to escape as they knew that the main gate was already a no-go for them. Yayi, who was consumed by fear, had fled and entered the hoodlums’s SUV, in confused state of mind. He later realized his mistakes and quickly made his way out of the car,” said a source.
The source added that if the boys had wanted to use anyone as human shield, Yayi inadvertently offered himself and they would have driven offwith him.
“So let us get the facts right and not try to cry wolf, where there was none. Everyone is free to associate with anybody or group, but there should be honour even among thieves,” the source stated.
