Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “When there are only three of you, two of you may not speak together apart from the third unless you join a group of others, lest your doing so sadden him.” [Ahmed]
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) loves every single one of His creation. He (subhana wa ta’ala) does not want a single one of them to be hurt unnecessarily. Thus, He taught us through His Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) how to take care of the feelings of others.
“This hadith prohibits two individuals from conversing privately when a third is present, and likewise prohibits three or more people from doing so when there is a single person apart from them. As for when there are four people and two of them speak privately in low tones apart from the other two, there is no harm in this.” [Reliance of the Traveller by Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri]
