Why Obi Is Not In My Team Against Tanzania – Oliseh

imageSuper Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has said Joel Obi would have made the list for the AFCON 2017 qualifier against Tanzania on Saturday but for his injury record.

Speaking in Abuja on wednesday, the coach said the player possess uncommon qualities that would have improved his team if fit.

Oliseh said: “He is a type of player we don’t have a lot of. He is a player who can win the ball for you in the midfield and he is a player who can start an attack. His volume of play is high but he is injury prone.

“Joel Obi not present here has to do with the fact that he was injured and just came back to training because I spoke with him last week. He was willing to come over for us to check but I told him ‘if you are injured, I trust you. You just went to a new club, so you don’t have a reason to pretend’. The club also said he was not fit.”

The Super Eagles’ gaffer however, promised that when the Torino of Italy midfielder is fit and is playing, he will get his chance to impress him.

When asked if he will miss the midfielder’s service against Tanzania, he noted that he wouldn’t know since he has not worked with the player before.

Joel Obi joined Torino on 2 July 2015 from Internazionale for a reported €2.4 million and in a 4-year contract.
