The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has denied the rumour that he was fired or forced to resign from the Lagos State Civil Service. The former Accountant General made this clarification over the weekend at a reception held in his honour by Eko Club, one of the earliest and frontline membership clubs in Lagos State.
In a statement released by his Director of Media and Communications, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the APC candidate made the clarification in his response to a question on the reasons for his exit from the service at a relatively young age of 49 in 2012. Ambode stated that he served the state meritoriously for 27 years and decided to move on in order to pursue other dreams. He said he was specially commended by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), when he expressed his intention to voluntarily retire.
He added that as an acknowledgement of his selfless service to the state, he was also issued a Certificate of Service by the Lagos State Civil Service “in recognition of the service I rendered to the state”. According to him, the rumours being peddled is the handiwork of the opposition party “which has run out of lies to tell and ideas that can swing voters in their favour.” Ambode, who is a Fulbright scholar and had runa topflight consulting company, Brandsmith, since his retirement, described the allegation that he was forced out of office as “untrue and totally baseless.”
The Epe-born Accountant also clarified the issue of leave bonus of Lagos State workers, stating that it has not been removed from workers’ remuneration “ but merely spread across 12 months into their monthly salary in deference to the yearnings of workers who preferred that arrangement.”
Mr. Ambode was received by a large gathering of members of the club which included the Chairman, Alhaji Farouk Grillo; Omoba Murphy Adetoro, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Alhaji Razak Muse, Chief Lanre Razak, Prince Adaramola Dada and Alhaji Muritala Ashorobi.
The governorship candidate took the members through his manifesto and urged them to support him in the forthcoming governorship elections.
He also provided answers to various questions on different issues ranging from education to healthcare and how to solve the perennial traffic congestion in many parts of the state. At the end of the event, he was decorated with an Honorary Membership of the club with an assurance of the members’ support at the polls.
In his own remark, Grillo, the club’s President, the APC governorship candidate earned the club’s endorsement based on what he described as “his tested and trusted public service experience, leadership acumen and an unflinching commitment to good governance”.
The Chairman of the interactive session, Chief Murphy Adetoro, reiterated the club’s stance by recognizing Ambode as the best candidate for the Lagos top job, while giving reference to his rare competence and landmark achievements in the Lagos mainstream civil service.
He said: “Ambode is an accomplished administrator who has served in different capacities and consistently worked to ensure that Lagos thrives as the true state of excellence. All these, combined with his experience and integrity, give one the confidence that he is the right man to take Lagos to higher heights”.
Meanwhile, Ambode will be hosted to a special Grand House Reception this evening at the foremost entertainment centre in Ikeja, The Coliseum. According the Guv’nor of the club, Mr. Ken Calebs Olumese, the APC gubernatorial candidate will be provided a platform to address members of the upscale club, be entertained by A-List artistes and be inducted into The Coliseum’s hall of fame.
Several prominent politicians have had The Coliseum’s GHR in their honour. From the late MKO Abiola, who was the first to be honoured at the club to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Fashola, SAN, the club’s grand reception has always been a huge event for the media and the socio-intelligentsia. “It is a seven-star event that is strictly by invitation,” says Olumese.
