Buhari To Review UBE Funding Mechanism – Bolaji Abdullahi

imageBolaji Abdullahi, the Deputy Director, Policy and Strategy, Buhari Campaign Organisation, has said that the present administration will review the Universal Basic Education (UBE) funding mechanism.

Abdullahi stated this when he spoke with NAN in Abuja on Thursday. He said that the review would be in line with the All Progressive Congress (APC) manifesto.

Abdullahi said that a review of the mechanism would promote proper development of basic education in the country.

He said that the review was also necessary due to the fact that state governments had refused to access their UBE fund meant for the advancement of basic studies.

“We are going to carry out a holistic review of the Universal Basic Education funding mechanism to see what we can do.

“We will proffer alternative means of funding basic education in states, since the funds are not being harnessed or utilised by some state governments due to the non-payment of counterpart funds,” Abdullahi said.

In a separate Interview with NAN, Chioma Osuji, the Policy Advisor, Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), urged the Federal government to review the UBE funding policy.

She said that inaccessibility of the funds by state governments was a hindrance to educational development, stressing that learning was critical to the nation’s economic growth.

She urged the Federal Government to device a different method of funding basic education in the country, if the payment of counterpart fund by state government was not working.
