EFCC, ICPC Allegedly Cart Away Hard Currency Found In A’Ibom Govt House

imageA combined team of operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) yesterday invaded the Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo and reportedly carted away bags of undisclosed amount of money in Pounds and Dollars.

The invasion of the govt house by the two anti-graft agencies sources said is a follow-up to an earlier raid by the Department of State Security Services where a stockpile of dollars were discovered.

The DSS had Thursday carried out a surprise raid on the Govt House complex with the intent of finding arms said to be concealed in one of the buildings housed in the complex, but instead met a stockpile of cash, Premium Times report.

The report by Premium Times however added that the DSS operatives left the cash untouched fear of the “political backlash that might result if we evacuate it. They had no instruction to evacuate it”.

According to Thisday, sources close to the State Government House said the EFCC and ICPC team shortly on arrival seized the phones of some of the workers in strategic offices in the government house to block them from outside communication.

It said on arrival, the team went straight to the State Presidential lodge located within the Government House premises and broke the iron and mental door of a mini bank or safe built in the lodge.

The source said members of the team dragged out bags of money suspected to be of hard currencies saying their visit to the State Presidential Lodge to pack such huge amount of money may have been on a tip off.

It was gathered that although the former Governor of the State, Chief Godswill Akpabio has left office, he was still in-charge of the Presidential lodge.
