Publisher of the groundbreaking website, SaharaReporters.com, Mr. Omoyele Sowore may be visiting the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the first time on Wednesday, August 26th since nearly two decades after graduating from the institution.

Publicity banner and posters on the campus has Sowore picture listed among other speakers at an upcoming lecture on “Good Governance and Sustainable Democratic Culture” scheduled to take place at the Afe Babalola Hall on the UNILAG campus.

The speakers also include Debo Adeniran of CACOL; Lekan Otunfodunrin, online editor of TheNation newspaper; Hamzat Ajibola, a journalist with the Guardian Newspaper and Oluwaseyi Adegoke, the publisher of “Inside Watch Africa” among others.

For Sowore, the host campus, UNILAG, is his alma mater, where he was a Students’ Union president in the 90s.

During his reign as president of the UNILAG Students’ Union government (ULSU), Sowore was expelled at least twice for leading students to protest against imposition of oppressive policies by university authorities on students of the institution. He also led protests in conjunction with other student union leaders and pro-democracy movements against dictatorial policies of military rulers in Nigeria.

Aside being held in different detention centers for his courageous adventures to liberate oppressed citizens and students, Sowore specifically became a target for assassination as he moved to fight against cultism on campus. He was severely attacked in what was later exposed as a government sponsored cult attack in March 1994. In the attack, Sowore was injected with unknown substances by the sponsored cult gangs, but he narrowly survived.

For this Wednesday event, speculations are rife that he may not attend despite the event conspicuously featuring on the banner, but unlike other events in past that enlisted him, Sowore is expected to be in attendance. 9ralife contacted Mr. Sowore, and he confirmed he’s aware of the event. As to his attendance, however, he responded “you never know, but if you are interested in hearing me speak just make sure you’re there”.

The event is organized by coalition of ex-students and is scheduled to hold by 10.00am at Afe Babalola Hall on the UNILAG campus.
